Administration of Medicine
The New York State Education Department prohibits the administration of over the counter or prescription medication to children in school unless the following requirements are met:
- A note must be on file in the school’s Health Office from the student’s health care provider physician, which includes the name of the medication, dosage, and frequency of administration.
- A note must be received by the school from the student’s parent requesting the student be given the medication.
- The medication should be supplied in a clearly labeled pharmacy bottle with the name of the child, name of the medication and dosage.
- Students who require medication for a chronic problem such as asthma must have a renewal of the order every September.
